Considering a Neck Lift | Ribbon Lift?

Say goodbye to sagging skin!

The Ribbon Lift might be the right fit for you if you want to improve skin drooping around the neck, and give yourself a neck lift effect.

The ribbon lift is actually a revolutionary device that is placed beneath the skin and sutured onto the platysma muscle, which loses strength with age and causes the skin to sag and become loose.

Ribbon lifts are more and more used as a lighter, less-extensive alternative to traditional neck lift surgeries. While neck lifts reign supreme in the field of treating loose, sagging skin around the neck, the procedure's scope proves excessive for milder cases of age-worn tissues. In those instances, many patients opt for the ribbon lift to avoid lengthier recovery and operation times.

The ribbon itself is a sling-like suture, lined with small probes. It's inserted beneath the skin to tighten and lift up the underlying muscle tissues. The procedure is minimally invasive, leaving only small, out of sight incision scars. A reduction in neck sag and wrinkles is noticeable soon after treatment. Since it's an outpatient procedure, you can return home on the same day.

Candidates for the ribbon lift exhibit the same qualifiers as candidates for a full neck lift surgery, but to a lesser degree.

  • Loose, sagging neck skin
  • Excess fat deposits around the chin
  • Loss of definition in neck curvature
  • Abnormal muscle banding in the neck

To avoid complications, patients are required to quit smoking for one week prior to treatment. Local anesthesia is used, and the surgery takes around 1 hour to complete. Sagging skin, or “turkey wattles”, develop when the platysma muscles become weak with age. The goal of the ribbon lift is to reinforce these muscles so that they can hold back the surrounding skin.

To accomplish this, a suture is positioned like a sling beneath the skin of the upper neck. It's inserted via small incisions behind the ears. They're inconspicuously placed between skin folds, or within the hairline, to keep the entry points hidden. Loose skin is lifted up and tightened back when the device is inserted. It's lined with small studs which extend into deep muscle tissues, stimulating collagen growth. This further strengthens the platysma muscle to enable longer-lasting results.

After treatment, you'll experience mild swelling and discomfort around the cheeks and upper neck. This usually lasts for 3-5 days. Strenuous activity and excessive rotation of the neck should be avoided for at least one week.

Results begin to show once the swelling diminishes. Neck skin will display a prominent degree of tautness from before the procedure, reducing signs of “turkey neck”. This gives its contour a more toned and defined appearance.  While initial results are evident after one week, the final results don't surface until several months in. The device itself lasts around 3-5 years, until it eventually dissolves into the surrounding tissues. Since it's designed to strengthen the platysma muscles, results can persist for years after dissolution.
